The Duero river from La Code (Mieza)

In the northwest of the province, in the lands along the Spanish-Portuguese border, the river Duero has dug deep valleys that carve the granite landscape. Spectacular walls and headlands have developed, allowing the water to cover the difference of altitude that separates the plateau from the Atlantic ocean.

These geographical conditions have favored a special, very benign microclimate, with crops and typically
Mediterranean species of flora and fauna.

On the slopes and hillsides irrigated by the
Duero, Tormes, Águeda, Yeltes, Huebra, Uces or Camaces rivers, the traveller will be able to encounter olive trees, orange trees, almond trees, prickly pears, junipers, oaks, and cork oaks where martens, boars, badgers, foxes and otters live that are watched over from the sky by tawny vultures, eagles, or black storks.

Due to the environmental quality of these places, they have recently been declared a
Nature Park.
