| The flow
of the river Tormes,
from Ledesma
toward its encounter with the Duero
and, its journey through the lands of the Spanish-Portuguese border
up to the jetty of Vega Terrón
set the stage for the personality and character of this district of
Salamanca. Deep valleys The presence of deep valleys favours the existence of peculiar climatic conditions, producing an environment fully characteristic of the Mediterranean where the flora and the fauna reach a high degree of biodiversity. These factors have led the area to be declared the Nature Park of Arribes del Duero. Cattle Raising Landscapes In the areas further away from the riverside that are more toward the centre of Salamanca, there is a prevailence of extensive areas of oaks that dominate the cattle landscapes of Vitigudino, Ledesma and Abadengo. Ledesma, Almendra, Villarino de los Aires, Pereña de la Ribera, Masueco, Aldeadávila de la Ribera, Mieza, Vilvestre, Saucelle, Hinojosa de Duero and La Fregeneda are the landmarks of the itinerary that will offer you the possibility of descending to the river itself in some places, see the large dams from spectacular lookouts or feel overwhelmed by the waterfalls of places like Pozo de los Humos. El Abadengo And, on the way back, you can go further into the lands of Abadengo and visit Sobradillo, Lumbrales, Cerralbo or Barruecopardo and finish in Vitigudino; This is the most important town in western Salamanca. You will be able to visit the church of San Nicolás and walk through its arched main square, which has a strong Castilian nature about it. The route culminates with a well deserved meal where lamb won't be lacking, as well as some sheep milk cheeses and sweet of almonds, accompanied of course, with some good wines of Las Arribes. |
