| The name
of this town of the Sierra de
Francia brings to our memory
times in which people from distant lands immigrated to repopulate this
area. It is from that period that names of people, places and things came that have remained in our memory as part of the living history that surrounds these places. San Martín del Castañar is built on a low hill leaning toward the river Francia. It is crowned with the remains of what was the castle of the village. There are remains of a Roman bridge and roadway from its remote past. There are also gravestones and the valuable artistic heritage that culminates in the beautiful Mudejar parochial church. Take a walk from the old bull ring to the hermitages that adorn the park of the town and, than travel along the streets of the village until you come across the town's curious Plaza Mayor, with a beautiful fountain and unique arches. Notice the traditional houses that you see along the way with their coat of arms above the doorway. Enjoy one of the towns that still retains, in its essence, the mountain way of life and culture. |
